HIV-infected patients undergoing highly active retroviral therapy (HAART) are still at risk for progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy ( PML). A study
published in a recent issue of Clinical Infectious Diseases tracked three patients who developed PML after four to 11 months of HAART. Investigators note that HAART caused a decline in plasma HIV RNA levels in two of the patients, but the PML escalated regardless, eventually killing both. The third patient had interferon-alpha added to his regimen and improved.
