Renal insufficiency may be more common amongst patients taking antiretroviral therapy than previously thought, according to findings from a study of 682 HIV-infected patients in four US cities. Turner Overton, MD, reported at the XVII International AIDS Conference that 41% of patients in the study exhibited stage two or higher renal disease, and 3% exhibited chronic renal disease. Like previous research on the topic, the study -- an examination of patients enrolled in the SUN Study -- found that tenofovir (Viread) use was associated with reduced renal function. Unlike some previous research, however, Dr Overton noted that black patients in this study appeared less likely than white patients to experience renal complications.
