An international team of researchers has found a link between HIV and key proteins the virus uses to attack cells, and they have developed a vaccine based on
their discovery. HIV requires receptors, including the CD4 receptor and CCR5 proteins, for access into cells. Tests revealed a very close link between CCR5 and CD4 but
not between other proteins and receptors involved in HIV's infection process. The study, published in the
Proceedings of the National Academy of
Sciences, notes that previous research suggests that those with naturally defective CCR5 genes can resist HIV infection.
