Can modern-day HAART completely stop HIV reproduction in vivo? Robert Siliciano, MD, PhD, believes the answer is yes. At the XVII International AIDS Conference this summer, the noted HIV researcher cited new evidence that our most potent antiretroviral regimens are capable of bringing about a complete cessation to active HIV replication. Although low levels of residual viremia may persist due to viral reservoirs, Siliciano argues that modern-day HAART may have finally robbed HIV of its "main weapon against us... its ability to evolve."
