How to order
Michael Clift has never directed a gay adult video before, but his work on
Private Lowlife could pass for that of an old pro with taste. He doesn't break the sex-in-uniform template, but he does raise this five-episode
military exercise a notch above the standard formula. Exploiting the inescapable, frequently hilarious homoerotic charge of old black-and-white military training films, he segues seamlessly, to sometimes startling effect, from
real documentary footage to mock documentary footage, and from there to explicit sex.
E
ach episode carries a training-film tag-- "Authority Figure," "Calisthenics," "Latrine Duty," "The Barracks," and "Grooming." The first intro is perfunctory, but all the others work. The sex has a masculine heat that recalls
Steven Scarborough's most effective work. The best scenes involve multiple partners; the action goes for broke in the fourth sequence, where Arpad Miklos, Ken Browning, and top-billed Francesco D'Macho form a rapacious threesome.
Miklos, a Kristen Bjorn discovery deployed to perfection in
Isle of Men (2001), has been all over the porn map in recent years, often wasted, flirting with overexposure. But Clift knows just how to harness this deluxe
Hungarian muscle-daddy's charismatic presence and intensity. Miklos responds with oral voracity, slam-dunk fucking, and the single most spectacular cumshot in this unexpectedly top-tier production.
