Louisville

By Michael Thompson

The biggest event of the year for this engaging city on the Ohio River is the Kentucky Derby (the first Saturday in May), which inspires lots of celebrations, and the bars stay open all night. Book early because the town fills to capacity. There's also the St. James Court Art Show in the fall, and the Breeders Cup in November. The Word, the SARJ Guide and the Louisville Letter cover the gay scene here.

Louisville is home to one of the most interesting bars anywhere. Sparks (104 W. Main) is a trip. Thursdays join the "a celebration of homosexuality" with go-go boys and $3 pitchers. Other nights are a mixture of straight, gay, many ages and colors, packed into the three bars that throb to various alternative beats. There's a dance floor in back, but the whole place is in motion. I wondered, awed by one guy's moves, "how did he do that back flip?" The bartender sometimes belches fire, and the recent "bare as you dare" party was wonderfully outrageous. There's some fresh air take-a-break space, too.

Life partners Yancy and Greg welcome you to Score (252 E. Market), the sharp video bar in the heart of gay Louisville. They have strippers on Fridays and Saturdays, pool tables, hi-energy music dancing on Fridays and Saturdays in the new back-room dance club, and a friendly and comfortable atmosphere always for meeting local people and visitors. On Sunday nights there are drag show benefits; Tuesdays feature swing music and dance lessons; and on Wednesdays there's Karaoke.

Other bars include: Connection (120 S. Floyd), a big dance club with a fireplace lounge, and a drag pageant show theater; Teddy Bear's (1148 Garvin Place), an intimate locals' nook; Tryangles (209 S. Preston); and Tynker's Too (319 E. Market).
