Lugano
This lake resort and financial center is in the Italian-speaking Swiss canton of Ticino. Beside Lake Lugano, surrounded by mountains, it's a Swiss Riviera, hardly an hour from Milan, with architectural delights, tree-lined promenades, and splendid piazzas. Ancient churches include San Lorenzo Cathedral, and there are art galleries such as the famed Thyssen-Bornemisza Collections. The American Franklin College (Via Ponte Tresa 29) and American School (Villa Nobile) add to an already large area student population.
Gay life in Lugano revolves around Gothic Sauna (Vicolo Vecchio 1). With fun on three floors, the place includes a Finnish sauna, steam bath, relax rooms, solarium, dark rooms, plus a labyrinth. Hot meals and drinks are available in a lounge that serves as a reading and discreet cruising room. Nude and foam parties are often hosted here. Reasonably priced lodgings next door at their Lugano Guesthouse (via Tesserete 7) offer basic and clean facilities from 75 francs a night, plus a balcony to take in the sights. Reception is located at the bathhouse. The website of Collettivo Lesbico Gay has updated gay information for the region that includes upcoming party dates and film screenings of interest.
