Old composers-- especially dead, straight ones-- need read no further. The Gay And Lesbian Association of Choruses (known by the
felicitous acronym "GALA Choruses") is throwing a gala "Festival 2000 Young Composer Competition" as part of what the group says is its "on-going and multifaceted
approach to providing meaningful inclusion of youth in the GALA Choruses movement." Specifically, the choral consortium is inviting composers younger than 25 years to
write an award-winning composition. Since youth is short of attention span, GALA wisely seeks submissions of just three to five minutes in length, previously
unpublished and unperformed, "of universal appeal," and scored-- your choice-- for SATB, SSAA, or TTBB (if you don't understand, consider entering the Publisher's
Clearinghouse contest instead). Set quill to score quickly-- the deadline quickly looms. One talented winner gets $500 cash prize (up to $166.67 per minute of music), plus airfare
and hotel to attend the world premiere next July at the GALA Choruses "Festival 2000" musicale in San Jose, California. For complete application info, write
GALA Choruses, PO Box 65084, Washington DC 20035, call 202-467-5830, or e-mail galachorus@aol.com.
