The 2003 Gay Men's Health Summit, set for Raleigh, North Carolina, May 7-11, may need a semiotician or two on hand. In case you were worrying about too narrow a focus for
this-- the third annual summit-- be assured that "health" as far as organizers are concerned "is broadly defined," and "The choice of 'Gay Men' [in the title] is meant to be about focus,
not exclusion." Now if we could just settle what organizers mean by "is." With all this broad-minded inclusiveness, participants can look forward to "workshops on holistic health, on
becoming your own health care advocate, on youth issues, on body image in our culture, on depression, on the concerns of rural gay men, on legal/health issues, on sexual function/dysfunction,
on healthy kink, on the pros and cons of party drugs, on nutrition, and on alternative therapies/holistic healing." And along with these trimmings and will be the meat-and-potatoes issues
of "major illnesses like hepatitis, and prostate cancer, as well as mental health issues, same-sex domestic violence and the relationship between spirituality and health." Zeitgeist-watchers
take note: the conference's prospectus mentions nothing about AIDS. For more info on "nationwide effort to create a strong, visible grassroots movement among diverse gay men focused
