An estimated 35 percent of rectal gonorrhea infections and 25 percent of oral gonorrhea infections may go undiagnosed and untreated in U.S. men who have sex with men, according to results from a large, four-year study in eight major U.S. cities. The study authors blamed insufficient training, lack of available tests and regulatory hurdles for the missed infections. Among other steps, the researchers recommend using repeated exposure -- rather than symptoms -- as a gauge for gonorrhea testing at non-genital sites, since many gonorrhea infections may be asymptomatic.
