This journey into the heart of pedagogy starts in an empty, industrial-looking gallery space at the University of Wisconsin. "Being left alone between semesters is a strange and lonely experience," muses bald, goateed
art professor Lex Kyler, looking wistfully at student prints and drawings on the walls. He sorely misses his students, whom he would have us believe are "young geniuses... with heart and soul that's launched on the eternal
quest for capturing beauty."
Be that as it may, he also appreciates the fact that one has "a pole fit enough to wave a proud flag from," another has "a penis that looks like it was carved by Rodin," and others have similarly
memorable attributes below the waist. As he heads for a men's room to jerk off, we're treated to masturbatory vignettes of each of his favorites.
Once Professor Kyler stops muttering drivel like, "Ah! The secret passions of an artist!" and gets down to business, the video drifts into something remarkable. Kyler imagines that he and his students are
in ancient Greece "next to the Parthenon," cavorting in the old agora in the manner of Socratic mentoring traditions. The set looks left over from an undergraduate production of
Electra, but you'll quickly forget it's there. For
one solid hour, it houses a wild, riveting seven-man orgy. This ecstatic exercise in multiple partner sex isn't always coherent, but as a celebration of male anatomy and male lust, it's right up there with the work of
group-sex maestros like Chi Chi LaRue (Dirty White Guys, Link 2
Link), and Joe Gage (Closed Set).
Principal of Lust is a reminder that Toby Ross, who has had one of the longest directorial careers in gay film and video, is still one of the best in the business.
