Health Canada recently approved the experimental HIV drugs TMC 114 and TMC 125 for use in a clinical trial by four Vancouver patients whose virus has become resistant to all current
drug treatments. The approval was made on compassionate grounds, according to the British Columbia Center for Excellence in HIV/AIDS. The center expressed relief that the patients would
be enrolled in the trial but added that it is concerned with procedural delays in approving drug trials on compassionate grounds. Of six British Columbia patients whose HIV was resistant to
all treatment last year, one has died and the center has lost contact with another.
