According to the Red Cross, tuberculosis is spreading throughout prisons in the world's poorest nations, a situation that could eventually threaten the outside community. In a report for the
British Medical Journal, the Red Cross' Hernan Reyes and Rudi Coninx explained that much of the spread can be traced to poorly operated treatment programs that are causing inmates to become resistant to the drugs. The researchers,
who point out that doing nothing is better than offering the wrong treatment, have asked officials to improve funding to fight the problem.
