State officials in Georgia announced that the program that helps fund
expensive drug treatments for AIDS patients is running out of money and will begin putting new applicants on a waiting list.
The AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP), which pays for the $10,000-a-year drug regimens with state and federal money, said it is strained by a conflict between decreasing funding levels and increasing numbers
of AIDS patients who live longer, therefore requiring larger amounts of expensive drugs.
"This really shows that the struggle to get access to basic life-saving medication is a challenge here in Atlanta and through the South," he said. "Funding for AIDS-related services [here] have never been at the level that
other parts of the country have enjoyed."
