New research published in the journal
Science suggests that gene therapy might be used to fight HIV. Michael Endres and colleagues at the University of Pennsylvania disabled HIV so that it could
not reproduce on its own, then equipped the virus with genes coding for certain receptors as well as a "marker" gene that would enable them to see whether the virus entered cells. The researchers found that the cells they
targeted began expressing those receptors. The next step, the researchers note, is to incorporate genes that would help eradicate HIV.
