How to order
"There are two gay mafia families," a prefatory title explains. In this two-volume humdinger from Falcon, porn impresario Warren Starr (Chi Chi LaRue) heads West Hollywood's lavender
mob; Mason Avalon (Paul Barresi) is his San Francisco counterpart. Each boss keeps a stable of loyal, muscular, Rufskin-swathed henchmen.
The Velvet Mafia's blithely twisted script is credited to "Austin Deeds," the screenwriting pseudonym of director Chris Steele's mother. (Seriously.) This is one of those rare, coherent
story-driven porn scenarios whose narrative elements not only rev up the sex but sort of make sense. Corporate rivalry over a porn model activates the plot; a liaison between Starr honcho
Derrick Vinyard and Avalon underling Omer adds to the sometimes gory mayhem.
A
mateur acting is often an asset here, reassuring viewers that this is a spoof, though at times the sanest response is to cringe. But Chi Chi LaRue, whose pointy fauxhawk wig makes
him look like an electrocuted wombat, and Paul Barresi, dapper and scary, approach their non-sexual roles with old-pro flair. And rock-solid Matthew Rush is as amiable as he is hot, even
when planning dastardly deeds and cackling, "Soon-- heheheh-- everything will be mine!"
The eight sex episodes, four in each half, include lively configurations of multiple partners. Some of the best vignettes, however, are one-on-one. Vinyard and Omer's lovemaking has
the vitality of unfeigned mutual attraction; Rush's session with Jason Ridge nearly melts the set. In a plot-thickening porn loop Ridge screens for Rush, smoldering newcomer Brock
Penn beautifully tops Trent Atkins. In an energetic flip-flop, bodybuilder Erik Rhodes and slutty young Fox Ryder make an unexpected perfect fit.
Supplemental material on the Velvet Mafia DVDs barely hints at the identity of "Fox Ryder," a performer previously known as Brent Corrigan, star of
Every Poolboy's Dream and other bareback offerings from Cobra Video. Corrigan caused an uproar last year by claiming that in 2004, when he made his first gay porn appearances, he was at least a year underage,
having presented a fake ID to his employers. Perhaps vengefully, Cobra claims ownership of the pseudonym "Brent Corrigan," leaving Falcon to identify this model only by the name of the
character he plays in The Velvet Mafia.
