Tchaikovsky-- old hat
|
 |
New York-- Think homosexuality and music. Do you think
grand opera? Judy Garland? Tchaikovsky and Copland? Billie Holiday?
Berobed cathedral choristers-- or disrobed ones? If this is what you
think, dear reader,
you think too vaguely. For while all these musical innovators and
forms may have set sail on a sea of homoerotic sentiment, none of
them properly hoisted up their masts a banner emblazoned
"gay," "lesbian," or
"transgender." Shrouded in ignorance and silence, they
belong to the musical past. The future, on the other hand, shall be
toasted March 3rd, when Outmusic casts the world's first Outmusic
Music Awards (OMAs) upon the waters of
song. "The OMA Awards recognize excellence in recordings, live
performance, support, songwriting, and LGBT cultural working by
Outmusic members," declares a press release. "Through a
series of ballots, members
have selected their nominees and will vote for the winner in each
category. Because the OMAs are limited to Outmusic members, it is a
true peer award, honoring success on a scale other major industry
awards may overlook."
That is to say, dearest reader, a small scale in a diminished minor
key. But in the vast wasteland of mass culture, is not the microcosm
where lies creative hope, with groups such as "The Kinsey
Sicks" (nominee for best
drag-queen a cappella quartet)? To find out who wins what and
takes home the coveted "Outmusician of the Year" prize, be there Saturday, March 3rd for luncheon at Lips (4 Bank Street,
Manhattan), noon to 3pm. In addition to
the awards, enjoy tuneful performances by Outmusic member artists.
Tickets are $25. Call 212-330-9197, e-mail oma@out-music.com, browse www.outmusic.com, or
(prestissimo!) send check or money order to Outmusic,
PO Box 1422, Old Chelsea Station, New York, New York 10113.
