It's no secret that Dawn doesn't have much kind to say about Ratzi, the new Pope. With a resume that includes stints as a Nazi minion and head of The Inquisition, Pope
Benedict hardly recommends himself as any sort of spiritual leader.
Thus, Ratzi's recent pronouncements about the nature of love and sex surprised. He writes that sexual love "is neither planned nor willed, but somehow imposes itself
upon human beings." How true; we can become infatuated with someone despite our conscious desires.
Ratzi continues: "True eros tends to rise in ecstasy towards the Divine, to lead us beyond ourselves . . . [on] a path of ascent, renunciation, purification and
healing...." Indeed; engaging in blazing white-hot sex seems akin to seeing the face of God.
"Even if eros is at first mainly covetous," Ratzi says (noting a crippling feature of lovebird love), "a fascination for the great promise of happiness in drawing near to
the other, [causes it to become] less and less concerned with itself." Real love "increasingly seeks the happiness of the other, is concerned more and more with the
beloved, bestows itself and wants 'to be there' for the other." Way to go, Ratzi!
The Pope concludes: "The element of agape thus enters this love, for otherwise eros is impoverished and even loses its own nature..." (i.e., even the hottest piece of
ass loses its appeal over time).
Refreshingly clear about how sexual heat and genuine love are conflated and intertwined, it seems odd that Ratzi seems to think that the genitals possessed by
those involved is of cosmic import....
