San Francisco Queer and There's
eventsmeister studied philosophy in college, so always appreciates when gay events are built from a firm axiomatic foundation. In the case of this August's Gay Softball World Series,
the ball may be soft, but the theoretical grounding is rock-solid. "The purpose of the San Francisco Gay Softfball League"-- host of the 2001 Series-- "is based on five principles," notes a press release about the August contest: "1)
To provide an opportunity for lesbian and gay people to play organized softball in an environment that is safe, healthy, and free of negative attitudes based on differences in sexual orientation. 2) To promote good sportsmanship.
3) To promote the general welfare of its members and the community. 4) To promote the development of positive relationships among its members and the community. 5) To organize and promote participation by its members in
such athletic, social, cultural, or charitable activities as may serve the preceding purposes." Alas, continuing strife in Palestine and Macedonia indicates SFGSL is not succeeding as it might in the promotion of the "general
welfare," not to mention "good sportsmanship." But perhaps these shortfalls will be resolved by August 14th, when the World Series opens at Yerba Buena Gardens, drawing up to 20,000 participants from all over the, well, US and
Canada. For more info, browse to www.sfgsl.org, or call the World Series Hotline, 415-436-0707.
