AIDS Explodes in Southern Africa

View our poll archive
As the result of a great deal of political and social upheaval, officials in southern Africa are expressing concern that they have not done enough to halt the advance of HIV and AIDS in their countries over the past 10 years. The region is now facing levels of the disease approaching those of central and east Africa. UNAIDS has forecast that the disease could lead to a vastly reduced life expectancy in the region, dropping from 62 years to 40 in South Africa, and from 57 years to 30 in Zimbabwe. Rates of infection have already surpassed 10 percent of the population in much the area, with about 2.4 million South Africans currently infected with HIV.
