Dawn is pleased to read that Democratic candidate for Colorado's 2nd congressional district Jared Polis appears headed to victory. If elected, Polis would become the first gay man to win a congressional seat as a freshman. (Other gay congressmen have come out after first being elected; Wisconsin's Tammy Baldwin won her seat as an out dyke.)

Reading over the Polis's bio, Dawn is impressed with his entrepreneurship, his dedication to education reform, his commitment to ending the war, and his contempt for Bush's veneration of the ultra-rich. Dawn is even ready to forgive Polis for his confessed 1988 role, at age 13, in phone-banking for then-presidential candidate Michael Dukakis, a man who tried to assert his "real guy" credentials by attacking gay rights.

The Denver Post reports that out gay congressman Barney Frank would welcome another gay democratic legislator, in part to take pressure off his high-profile homo status. According to the Post, Frank is looking forward to being able to smoke cigars in public. "I can start indulging some bad habits," Frank told the Post. "Let the young gay people find someone else to emulate."

Hmmmm. Dawn recalls that shortly after Barney's coming out, he was tagged with revelations that his then-boyfriend Steve Gobie was running a whore service out of the congressman's condo, making it unclear just how revered Frank's role model status really is. (Political junkies might remember that the House member leading the 1990 call for Frank's censure or expulsion was none other than then-Congressman Larry "Wide Stance" Craig!)
