Despite great advantages, antiretroviral therapy poses a number of challenges. Many of the effective regimens are complex, have major adverse effects, can be difficult for patients
to adhere to, and eventually (though not inevitably) lead to antiretroviral drug resistance. These problems continue to limit the effectiveness of ART and present major challenges
in managing HIV infection.
For detailed information about when to initiate ART in individuals with established HIV infection, and which regimens are effective for the initial treatment of HIV infection see
www. hivinsite.org and search for "initiating antiretroviral therapy."
