The Associated Press recently ran a blurb about a band called The Electric Amishmen who parody the simple-living Amish folk of Pennsylvania. Predictably, some critics cluck that songs like "Barn to Be
Wild" are offensive for poking fun at others' religion. What caught Dawn's eye, though, was the editorial assertion that "the Amish are committed to a simple, peaceful, and pious life." Unmentioned was the fact that they are
famous for beating their children to instill "respect" for patriarchy. It seems a peculiarly American trait that people think that claims of religiosity should insulate them from criticism; instead, rational people understand that
the "pious" among us are often most deserving of ridicule and condemnation.
