When Sparks Fly
By Giacomo Tramontagna

When Sparks Fly
Rating: 3 Stars
Produced by Scott Masters. Written and directed by Paul Barresi. Videography by Mark Meister. Edited by Jim Wigler. Music by Sharon Kane. Starring Drew Larson, Alec Martinez, Zachery Scott, Troy Michaels, Noah Walker, Matt Hunter, Brett Wilde, and Rob Kirk.
How to order

Drew Larson, the sole redeeming feature of some of the low-end porn videos that launched his career, moves up a notch in When Sparks Fly. This Studio 2000 holiday bauble, crafted by Paul Barresi from an idea by editor-about-town Kevin Glover, is formula stuff that feels made by committee. But the production has a luxurious gloss, and the cast of twentysomethings includes a few first-rate sexual athletes.

Gathered at a tree-trimming party on Christmas Eve, some of Larson's friends recall holiday-related sex exploits. The unexpectedly horse-hung Noah Walker recounts the time he treated quasi-straight Rob Kirk to a Valentine's Day fuck. Alex Michaels remembers a Halloween costume party that occasioned a three-way involving police patrolman Zachery Scott (whom he'd mistaken for a guest), Zorro impersonator Matt Hunter, and Michaels himself in gladiator gear. Alec Martinez describes a July 4th date with Brett Wilde. Alone at the end of the evening, Larson dreams about love object Troy Michaels.

Some of these models read lines as if they absorbed their acting skills from '50s highway-safety films, but they're passionately into the sex. Troy Michaels looks deceptively like a vanilla Christmas cookie, but he and Larson have excellent chemistry; when Larson fucks him, he gets so carried away that he bites his own knee. This is an unusually impersonal project for Paul Barresi, but he tackles it with professionalism, and works in some subversive touches. (Wait for the Barresi-esque closing twist regarding Troy Michaels.) Now that he has done competent work with someone else's concept, Studio 2000 should give Barresi the freedom to make the rougher, quirkier, more personal stuff that he does best.
