How to order
Colt's John Rutherford joined forces with gifted Jerry Douglas
(Honorable Discharge, The Dream Team) to create this Western-themed classic. Strong production values and high-end technical skills
put BuckleRoos as close as any gay video has ever come to resembling
a mainstream feature. Todd Montgomery's unobtrusively masterful videography includes layered deep-focus set-ups, nimble hand-held camerawork, and crane shots. His intricate coverage of every scene enabled editor Andrew Rosen to cut this two-part release as if it were
meant to be shown at your local cineplex.
The 23-man cast is superb; the principals could hardly be better. Dean Phoenix and Marcus Iron both reach professional peaks. Owen Hawk's breakthrough performance is the porn-world equivalent of Brad Pitt's career-making turn in
Thelma and Louise. Zak Spears, as a kind of guardian angel who dispenses sexual empowerment through magic belt buckles bearing the Colt logo, is a potent presence in a non-sexual role.
The supernatural device is fun but sophomoric (like the title), and it isn't really needed. Phoenix and Iron, as co-owners of the Beefland Ranch, have an exquisite acting rapport. Their characters live together, work together, hang out together, and jerk off together,
but they're not officially a couple. Years before, when they met during Rodeo Week in Cheyenne, they had one Olympian night of sex, then took a vow of chaste companionship, hoping to be "buddies for life, not boyfriends for a week." As
BuckleRoos progresses through ten beautifully crafted sex scenes, the pair rethinks that strategy.
This is one of those porn productions that advocates commitment while celebrating promiscuity, and doesn't seem to recognize that one need not preclude the other. But the sex is guaranteed to keep viewers from getting too analytical. The first half peaks with a
jaw-dropping three-way in a convertible parked within sight of passing traffic, and ends in a roiling five-man orgy. In the second, Iron ("A man's ass, that's one of God's wonders") converts a pair of Mormon missionaries, and in the closing scene joins Phoenix, who gets fucked
on camera for the first time here, in one of the most romantic depictions of gay sex ever filmed. The directors' commentaries on the DVDs may be self-congratulatory, but in this case, congratulations are in order.
