At last month's International Congress on Infectious Diseases in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, a top AIDS expert suggested that "call-center Romeos" were
an important vector for HIV transmission in India.
According to the Associated Press, India's call centers employ 1.3 million people, mostly youths just out of high school or college; call center staffers can
earn 25,000 rupees (U.S. $600) a month, more than a government doctor's salary. Dr. Suniti Solomon, who runs an AIDS center in the southern city of Chennai,
told conference-goers that three of four call center workers seek HIV testing at her clinic every week. "They have all the money. They huddle together in the
night. They are young, they are sexually active, so naturally they start," Solomon notes. She said groups of young men and women rent apartments along the
beach during the weekends and have multiple-partner sex.
