New Jersey-based Robert Prion's home-produced videos are technically uneven. They're often marred by tacky sets, music that seems at odds with the action, self-consciousness performances, and
dialogue worthy of Edward D. Wood, Jr. Nevertheless, Prion's work is populated with real men of varying ages and types who provide a perfect antidote to California gym clones. And when conditions are right, Prion can be the
best director of man-to-man sex this side of Kristen Bjorn.
In Nothing Else Matters, dialogue is mercifully understated and kept to a minimum. Prion concentrates on what he does best: orchestrating sex. Here, the chemistry among the performers runs from
effervescent to explosive. The cast is attractive and, for the most part, attractively presented (though Jay Richards may be too mature for that
Partridge Family hairdo). Each of the half-dozen episodes contains first-rate sexual
vignettes, and some scenes are mesmerizingly hot from beginning to end.
There are good contributions from Sonny Diaz, Antonio Vega, Kevin Alexander, and Mark Gallo, collaborating on a group hangover cure. Best of all, this video provides sleepy-eyed Texan sex prodigy
Karl Thomas with his best showcase in years. He's well partnered, first by Franco DiOstia, a sultry newcomer, then by Vincent DeMarco, a standout member of the Prion repertory company and a first-rate sexual performer in
his own right. There's a startling moment when DiOstia gives Thomas a faceful of semen. Later, in a feverish solo with a dildo, Thomas ejaculates into his own mouth. And his encounter with DeMarco is a tempestuous
romp. There are longueurs where you may get hung up on the furniture or Thomas's elaborate tattoos-- on his right shoulder blade, is that a huge paramecium, or the Virgin of Medjugorje?-- but the sex, at its best, is
extraordinary. When Robert Prion is on a roll, nothing else matters.
