'Mindful meditation' keeps CD4 count stable?

View our poll archive
You've probably heard a million times that stress can hurt your immune system. But does that mean that reducing stress can boost your immune system? The answer may be yes, according to a small U.S. study.

The study took 67 stressed-out HIVers and put about two-thirds of them on a two-month program of "mindfulness meditation," which tries to help people avoid dwelling too much on the past or the future. People who took part in the meditation generally didn't lose any CD4 cells, while those who didn't meditate generally saw their CD4 count drop.

"The mindfulness program is a group-based and low-cost treatment," notes lead researcher David Creswell. "If this initial finding is replicated in larger samples, it's possible that such training can be used as a powerful complementary treatment for HIV disease, alongside medications."
