Life was cruel to nine-year-old Steven Wilson. Taunted for playing with girls' toys, he was drowned by a neighbor child. Tyra Hunter came also to
an ugly end: medical personnel mocked her chosen sex instead of offering emergency care. Violent death was the lot of Debra Forte, who suffered multiple six-inch
stab wounds to the chest, "any one of which," notes Gwen Smith, a San Francisco web designer, "would have been sufficient to kill her." Steven Wilson, Tyra Hunter,
and Debra Forte are no longer among us. But their stories live on in cyberspace, thanks to the work of Ms Smith, creator of "Remembering the Dead," a site that
commemorates a litany of murder against gender-crossers dating from as early as 1969 and as recently as last month. Pour a stiff drink, put a Buddha figurine atop your
computer, recall the kaddish, and point your browser to www.gender.org/remember.
