Dawn frequently has occasion to look at
Featurettes, a glossy periodical that aims to supply ready-made news items for small, weekly papers looking to fill space.
Featurettes is clearly sponsored by corporate
interests, including big energy, leading to some startling "stories," like how greenhouse gases are good for the environment and Arctic drilling will be a boon to caribou.
Last month their ersatz news blathered on about how safe and beneficial nuclear power is to all those close to it. Reassuring readers about nuclear power plant safety,
Featurettes noted that "employees with
'unescorted access authorization' are under continual behavioral observation programs." Yikes. What a Catch-22: only a seriously disturbed person would ever subject themselves to such dehumanizing scrutiny. Instead of reassurance,
the faux news item has readers wondering if safety engineers at nuke plants really
are all Homer Simpsons....
