Boomerang
By Giacomo Tramontagna

Boomerang
Rating: 3 Stars
Produced by Dan Cross. Edited and directed by Michael Zen. Written by Dak King. Videography by Ed Max. Starring Talvin DeMachio, Alex Carrington, Steve O'Donnell, Sam Dixon, Luke Savage, Bud Sudduth, Eduardo, Marcelo Reeves, K.C. Hart, and Dany Brown.
How to order

"Hollywood..." reads the opening caption, "Land of a Thousand Dreams. Hollywood... Land of a Thousand Hustles." An essay on the reciprocity of the dream and the hustle-- as well as a shrewd lesson in role reversal-- Boomerang is one of those rare porn videos that is about something in addition to getting off. (And no, it has nothing to do with Australia.) Stylishly directed by Michael Zen from a well-crafted script by Dak King, shot in vibrant color, it's also intermittently very erotic.

Lovers Sam Dixon and Steve O'Donnell occupy the opening scenes. Dixon's fantasies are focused on a display ad in the morning paper: "Dream Jobs! Men Wanted. Big Bucks! Foreign assignments. Call for interview." Meanwhile, in their bedroom, O'Donnell lies asleep. In his dreams, he and Dixon enjoy a long, luxurious sixty-nine, then fuck each other. In reality, though, Dixon has grown sexually distant. When O'Donnell spots the advertisement Dixon has circled, he calls for information.

He reaches Alex Carrington at a desk in a rabbity office. "We're a small company," Carrington explains, "that places people in jobs all over the world." The application process involves an interview, a $100 fee, and a physical. Carrington's phone conversation with O'Donnell takes place in the midst of an interview with applicant K.C. Hart, who is soon sent to an adjacent consulting room, where white-jacketed Talvin DeMachio introduces himself as Victor Caranha (or some such thing), "Physician at Large." Hart is asked to strip, read an eye chart (I-A-M-H-O-R-N-Y), and submit to a rectal exam. Then he's handed a specimen jar and told to produce a semen sample.

This procedure is followed twice more, with prospective clients Eduardo and Bud Sudduth. As Hart and Eduardo work to fill their specimen jars, we're admitted into their imaginings. Hart's reverie of sex with Dany Brown, ending with Brown flashing a delighted grin as Hart blasts him with geysers of sperm, is especially memorable. Eventually, skeptical applicant Sudduth unmasks Carrington and DeMachio as scam artists who have been secretly videotaping the semen-sample sessions. In a blend of lunacy and heat, he forces them to do his sexual bidding. Then, in the final moments, the tables are turned on the viewer. If the acting were stronger and the sex more consistently hot, Boomerang could have been stunning. As is, it's more than a cut above average.
