The danger in electing male heterosexuals to public office was illustrated again by the case of Republican Senator Dave Durenberger. The Senate voted 96 to 0 to "denounce" him for bringing "dishonor and disrepute" to the Senate through what the New York
Times called "Improper financial dealings."
The Times explains, "Everyone knew that Mr. Durenberger, a Minnesota Republican, participated in schemes to pad his income."
Apparently it was typical heterosexual problems that interfered with the Senator's ability to function on the job properly: the
Times speaks of Senators "speculating that a troubled family life drove him to breaches of the Senate's rules."
More specifically, the paper says that Senators talked about Durenberger facing a stormy marriage, sons with drug problems, and financial troubles." Why can't he be more like us?
