New York City goes country
New York Does dancing lead to promiscuity? That question, which so troubled 1920s-era Baptists about their jitterbugging offspring, gets a resounding answer "yes" from
the International Association of Gay and Lesbian Country Western Dance Clubs (you know, the IAGLCWDC). "With two-step, country waltz, and swing, your partner is literally in your arms
as you twirl around the floor," declares Hoedowner Jon Lee. "It's a terrific ice-breaker, and a way to make contact without a lot of pressure. Songs are short, so you can have
multiple three-minute 'relationships' over the course of an evening." What happens afterwards is entirely up to you.
The Association expects some 600 boot-scooters from the world over to come to its semi-annual convention, over Presidents' Day weekend (February 14-16, 2003). Now,
New York may not be country. And it isn't western (except, perhaps, to the delegates expected from Amsterdam and Munich). But that's not going to stop anybody, for an event dubbed
as "A little bit country, a little bit queer." The Hoedown will raise money for the New York City Antiviolence Project (so we can conclude that not only does dancing abet promiscuity,
it prevents violence). Registration is $90 ($95 after February 1), and includes three dances, a choice of over 20 workshops, team competitions, exhibitions, Sunday brunch, and a
line-dance swap (sounds kinky, whatever it is). Single tickets are available for dances, and day passes can be had for Saturday or Sunday. To register, browse to www.nychoedown.org,
or ring up Susanna (now that's a country-fresh name) Stein at 212-803-3641.
