Montreal theater festival debuts
Montreal-- If you've never heard of the Montreal GLBT International Theater Festival, it's because there's never before been one. But that changes this month-- when the first annual edition crawls from the womb, October 28th through November 7th. With the festival
finding its feet, the emphasis isn't on
international-- the offerings are mostly home-grown. But any festival in Quebec is itself "international"-- roughly half the performances are in
français, and the rest in
anglais.
Among the latter are Jujubes, a play promising that it "does not contain trans fats, a sex scene, true romance, a plot, bad clothes, or an exploding shopping cart." But be forewarned,
"Jujubes does contain: friends, drugs, lovers, doubt, hot men, and candy."
And then there's Tacit Agreement, "A blistering psychological thriller" that unfolds "as a dysfunctional gay couple prepares to celebrate their 10th anniversary" only to find "their relationship put to the test, culminating in a crisis at their party that is a surprise to
everyone including themselves."
Festival impresario is Davyn Ryall, who cut his teeth working with such events as Divers/Cité, and various local theater fests. "I may not be the best director, the best writer, or the best actor," Ryall told the
Montreal Mirror, "but I am a damn good coordinator." Attendees
can judge for themselves as they check out the offerings, available for perusal at www.villagescene.com. Festival Central is Station C bar (1450-56 Ste-Catherine East) in the Village. For more info, browse to www.villagescene.com, or call the box office at 514 574-4528, or
