How to order

In How the West Was Hung, some lovingly assembled atmospherics sit there waiting for a story to kick in, while the rudimentary script fights coherence. But this horndog hoe-down does have one of the best production designs of any gay adult video in recent memory. It's also remarkably well populated, with 20 sexual performers, 12 bit players, and some extras giving life to a feisty frontier town. The cast looks splendid in cowpoke trappings and pseudo-period underwear, though their buffed bodies and designer haircuts evoke the West Hollywood wing of the Gay Men's Country Dance Association, not the Old West. (Another anachronistic touch, but one it would be asinine to complain about, is the presence of late 20th-century latex condoms.)

The sex scenes, driven by director Chi Chi LaRue's uncanny knack for inciting breakneck lust, are intermittently stunning. Highlights include a bilingual jail-cell tryst between sheriff Bruce Hill and cute Mexican vagrant Javier Duran, and two travelers (newcomers Danny Lee and Marco Mancini) beating off in a moving stagecoach while their fellow passengers doze. Axel Garret, a blond Jeff Daniels look-a-like who scored in the early '90s in Kiss Off and A Family Affair, makes a strong comeback as a rancher who imports a new husband (Lane Fuller) from the big city.

The pièce de resistance, the episode that stakes a claim to classic status, is a 40-minute, 12-gunslinger orgy in a saloon. It's a wild, bravura set piece-- well edited by Andrew Rosen-- in which gamblers, gunfighters, cowboys, the bartender, and a piano player tear off their clothes, suck with abandon, and fuck on tabletops. The scene is so damned hot that two minutes into it, you're likely to forget it was awkwardly set up. It's like a 19th-century Viagra party. Among this gang of sexual firebrands, Spike, Dylan Reece, Chad Savage, Lucas James, Jason Branch, and especially Christopher Scott have indelible moments. The two-cock fuck has ceased to be a novelty, but when Christopher Scott is on the receiving end, you pay attention.
