Marriage as in institution is in bad shape. Shotguns, social ostracism, and tax policy have all been used to force people into this most unnatural of arrangements. But now, Christ-obsessed Missouri
lawmakers are resorting to overt bribery.
Ten Missouri legislators have introduced a state law giving $1000 to suitably pure newlyweds. To qualify for the marriage bribe, each member of the couple must be at least 21, be free of STDs, and have
no offspring nor ex-spouses. (The woman also cannot have had an abortion, of course.) The bill would impose a $1000 on any spouse found "at fault" in a divorce.
Such silliness. Let churches bless weddings, let the state offer any couple (or trio or group) contracts that bind, and let's quit bribing and threatening people into social and legal arrangements not of their
free choosing.
