The New York Times recently ran a piece detailing how Indian immigrants to the US are making use of new scientific techniques to determine the sex of a weeks-old fetus. Use of this technology is illegal in India because of
the fear that women there will abort fetuses determined to be female (since Indian culture puts such a high premium on male children).
When mentioning this article to friends and acquaintances, Dawn was struck by the sympathy shown by many for the Indian prohibition. Otherwise clear-thinking folks were unable to grasp that it is not for the
government to say why a woman may elect to abort. Those who'd substitute their morality for a potential mother's are no better than abortion opponents who find no reason permissible. In fact, those who would allow some reasons but
not others, are actually worse than absolutists, who at least show consistency in finding no reason that excuses what they consider murder. But many "liberals" who'd ban abortion for "bad" reasons like "sexism" just don't
understand that advocating choice means tolerating... choice.
