August 1998 Letters

Loves Web Site

Gentleman, I like the look and easy navigation of your site [www.guidemag.com]. Great job. Read your monthly magazine also, keep up the good work and continued success.

Sex Positive

I picked you up again while I was in New Orleans. You are the most progressive magazine of the gay world, sex positive while magazines like The Advocate are sex negative.

I got good news concerning that stupid Child Pornography Protection Act law which has nothing to do with actual child porn or the victim! The Free Speech Coalition based in Woodland Hills, California, has been fighting to overthrow that stupid law. The first round they lost. So they appealed again and there's been a breakthrough. In the U.S. v. Hilton, the provision against 18 year olds looking 17 has been declared vague by the judge. So that means porn stars who are 18 but look younger are now legal. But there's still a long way to go toward getting that stupid censorship law off the books.

The court case you mention involved a self-proclaimed anti-kiddie-porn crusader, David Hilton, who "morphed" images of kids' features onto images of adults' bodies to create what a 1996 federal law defined as "child pornography." In a delicious-- if tragic-- irony, Hilton then found himself charged with child porn possession, facing 10 years in a federal slammer. Only then did he discover his constitutional rights and argued that the law was overly vague in allowing police to arrest people possessing images of youthful-looking adults. A federal judge in Maine, thankfully, agreed.

Loved Amsterdam, Wants Info on Portugal

I really enjoy your gay travel web site and recently stayed at a recommended bed and breakfast; it was terrific, and Carlos there serves fantastic breakfasts!

Please advise about gay travel in Portugal. I can't seem to find any information. Is there a reason for that?

via the Internet

We've not been to Portugal, but your suggestion has been forwarded to our travel editors; maybe we'll have more for you in the future.

MaleBox Works Best

I ran ads in your personals section [also available at www.guidemag.com] in the past. I had more success with your publication than I did with local papers and local gay publications. (I won movie passes from one of the local ads but didn't get any responses.)

You would think as big as Houston is I would be able to meet someone locally, but no such luck; so, I want to run another ad in your international section to make either a new friend or maybe a connection.

Death Penalty State Offended by Homo Sex

The Guide (June, 1997; V17 N6) has been reviewed and denied in accordance with Section 3.9 of the TDCJ-ID Rules and regulations for the following reason: a specific factual determination has been made that the publication is detrimental to prisoner's rehabilitation because it would encourage deviate criminal sexual behavior. Page 151 contains graphic depiction of men engaging in homosexual activity.

If there is a desire to appeal the rejection of the aforementioned publication, this may be accomplished by writing to the Director's Review Committee. The appeal must be mailed so as to arrive at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice-- Institutional Division within two weeks. **
