New figures include HIV data from several states for the first time
New CDC data show the number of Americans diagnosed with HIV in 2006 was sharply higher than in past years. However, this reflects improved surveillance collection rather than a rise in the epidemic, the agency said.
In 2006, 52,878 people in 45 states and five U.S. dependent areas were diagnosed with HIV, compared to 35,537 people in the 38 states and five U.S. dependent areas from which CDC collected data in 2005. The new figures include HIV data from several states for the first time, including California and Illinois. In the 33 states and five areas with longstanding HIV reporting, new HIV/AIDS cases remained relatively stable from 2003 to 2006, CDC said.
