Almost 30 percent of Koreans with HIV/AIDS eventually commit suicide, the Korean Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said recently. Of 864 AIDS-related deaths in the country,
258 patients ended their own lives, the center said. Suicides among HIV/AIDS patients increased from 18 in 2002, 26 in 2005 to 33 last year.
Experts say the rise of HIV/AIDS suicides stems in part from a society that continues to isolate and alienate those infected. "Public prejudice against AIDS has led to discrimination by
other members of society, creating a sense of isolation," said Seong Kyeong-hoon, education manager of the Korea Alliance to Defeat AIDS. "To change it, we should open the AIDS issue to
the public."
