When Jackson Phillips gets on-stage jitters, he has to pee. But nervous days are over for this passionate porn star. Phillips talks with Ed Karvoski, Jr.

He's well travelled, he's well educated, and-- well-- he's got one of the most well-defined, lean bods in the adult video biz. He's Jackson Phillips, nominee
at 1997's Gay Erotic Video Awards for Best Top, as well as Best Erotic Scene for his work in Forum Studios'
A Love Story.
Originally from Massachusetts and schooled in Europe, Phillips migrated to Miami and fell in love with the locale. "Miami is the most happening place there
is, period, hands down," he proclaims. "People from Europe, people from South America, people from the Caribbean, people from California-- they've all sort of
gravitated here because the energy is so exciting. Every week there's a new restaurant that opens, every month there's a new club that opens; it's constantly renewing itself. If
you leave and come back in three months, it's a whole new place. That makes it really, really exciting."
Keeping pace with the constant state of flux in Florida's beachside city, Phillips made some significant changes in his life. "I used to own an ad agency," he
explains, "and I realized I hated being removed from the creative aspects of advertising. Managing people is not very creative; it's rather tedious. So when I had an offer to sell
my share of the ad agency, I did. I sold the ad agency, I divorced the husband of seven years, I sold the house, and I went to the beach to figure out what I was going to
do next."
One day while catching rays and contemplating his future, fate came knocking on his beach blanket. "I was sitting there on the beach, reading my book, and a
scout from Falcon Studios came up to me and said, 'Those are fabulous pecs! They'd look great on video!'" Phillips recounts. "My response was, God, that's a really
lame opening line. But it turned out he really was from Falcon."
A porn star was born.
"My first video actually remains one of my
favorites-- Midnight Run from Jocks, a division of Falcon. I was extremely fortunate in that I was paired with
Mark West, who is just a fabulous person, a beautiful man, and the nicest, kindest, most gracious person to work with. In retrospect I realize how lucky I was to have
worked with him on my first film; I was so nervous that we had to stop filming every five minutes so that I could go pee-- when I get very nervous, I have to pee a lot!"
Phillips also offers kind words for Matt Bradshaw, his co-star in
A Love Story. "Another case of really enjoying my co-star," he says, "and that all comes through
in the film." Concurring with that assessment, the 1998
Adams Gay Video Directory hailed, "[F]or electricity and passion, his pairing with Matt Bradshaw in
A Love Story is magical."
"A Love Story was very different than anything I'd done before," notes Phillips. "There were 22 pages of dialogue, which is unheard of in porn. Considering on
the other end of the spectrum, I appeared in Desert
Train, where there are four words of dialogue-- and I have all four!" (Count 'em: "We're here. Get out!")
While Phillips has fond memories of many co-stars, he recalls one experience that was less pleasant. "I worked in a scene with a guy who kept stopping every
five minutes to look at straight porn. Meanwhile he's stuffing a dildo the size of a fire hydrant up his butt. 'Honey,' I told him, 'you need to just figure out who and what
you are. You are just making life difficult for all of us here.'"
Life is actually quite good these days, according to Phillips. "I'm happily married to a lovely husband who has a striking
resemblance to Ken Ryker. Having met Ken Ryker and having played with him [in
The Other Side of Aspen], I'll take my husband any day!"
