The Guide's Bill Andriette, along with journalists from the New York Times, Washington Post, Slate.com and other publications were honored at the first annual "Sexies" journalism awards at New York's Splash on October 4.
"Tipping point for gay sex"
(The Guide, December 2007)
was named runner-up in the "News" category. About federal porn record-keeping rules, "This piece makes anti-sex laws relevant to the average person and complex legal issues accessible for lay people," the judges said.
The Sex-Positive Journalism Awards is sponsored by the Center for Sex and Culture, the Playboy Foundation, and the National Coalition for Sexual Freedom.
"There are hundreds of journalism awards out there, including some that recognize good coverage of gay and lesbian issues," say the organizers of the Sexies. "But none of them address sex itself: sexual expression, sexual freedom, sexual health. We want to fill that gap."
First-place winners included:
-- Pari Esfandiari and Richard Buskin for their Playboy article "Sex in Iran," which judges said offered a "window onto a world of contradictions most Americans know nothing about";
-- Debbie Nathan for "Hysteria, Exploitation, and Witch Hunting in the Age of Internet Sex" from Counterpunch, praised for "dismantling of Kurt Eichenwald's odious reporting in the New York Times.... Besides taking care of Eichenwald, Nathan also helps us think intelligently about teen libidos" ;
-- Jill Bauer of the Miami Herald for "Never Too Old for Sex" which judges said "challenged conventional assumptions about geriatric asexuality and undesirability" .
