"This Way Out," you might think, is a radio show
for fire-safety engineers, a program for the
terminally ill, or perhaps Radio Belgrade's special service to Kosovo. Not so. Now in its 12th year, "This Way Out" is
sort of The Guide magazine of radio-- it's queer, and though maybe hard to find, is available the world over.
The weekly, half-hour program is a radio news-'n'-culture "magazine" produced largely by volunteers. The show
shines the light of West Coast gay culture to places like Iowa City, Malmo (Sweden), Amsterdam, Edinburgh, and
everywhere that shortwaves excite the ether. The Internet has eliminated the need for such broadcasts, one
might argue. But "This Way Out" fills the interstices of cyberspace, reaching people who think mice are merely
small rodents, the blind, illiterate, and those who just like radio. If you want to sample the show and don't live
in any of the 100 communities where it is locally broadcast, tune in with a shortwave set, or listen over
the Internet with Real Audio (point to www.qrd.org/qrd/www/media/radio/thiswayout). Are
you a broadcaster yourself? You can air "This Way Out" for $32 a month or less. Write PO Box 38327, Los Angeles, California 90038.
