As executive producer at San Diego's All Worlds Video, Dirk Yates has presided over the creation of some of the best male porn of the '90s. As a director, he's best known for documentary-style interview compilations in which ostensibly straight military personnel talk about their lives and masturbate on camera, and for the Choke 'Em series of military jerkoff fantasies. Yates's wankfests are uneven in quality and may offend viewers with low tolerance for homophobic and misogynistic banter, but nobody understands the homoerotic undercurrents of military life better than Dirk Yates.

In Tales from the Foxhole, Yates folds some of the ingredients of his usual output into a story-driven opus where men in uniform do have full-throttle sex with one another. Crawling through the underbrush in the course of a training exercise, Privates Lane Fuller and Leo Lyons take a break and talk about their sex lives. Lyons, who insists he's straight, admits to drunken experimentation with a buddy at a time of pussy shortage. Fuller, who admits to being gay (he tells when Lyons more or less asks), recounts an experience with Dirk Yates's jerkoff documentary operation. That night Lyons dreams of orgying with fellow recruits and Drill Instructor Billy Herrington. In the morning, Lyons and Fuller have sex.

This video is helped enormously by the relaxed, understated performances of most of the cast, especially Lyons and promising newcomer Fuller. As the D.I., Herrington is simultaneously funny and hot. And Haus Weston is so convincing as a soldier who submits to the Dirk Yates interview routine that you begin to wonder if he's acting.
