June 2008 Letters
Lowcountry High Culture, Kudos from Great Britain, December Issue Fan, February Issue Fan, Defend All Non-Traditional Marriages, Offer from China

Lowcountry High Culture

In all the issues of The Guide that I've seen, I've never encountered a write-up of Charlestown, South Carolina. Why not?

We've got a gay/bi community. And we're one of the top five American cities for cruise ships to visit. Plus there's the history evident in our Historic District: Charles- town is pretty much a southern Boston.

You should come down for a visit, especially during the Spoleto Festival, two weeks of opera, music, theater, dance and special events starting Memorial Day weekend. Gay men from around the world come.

My hottest memory of Spoleto was hooking up with a hottie from Jordan. I topped him good, hard, and fast -- on top of a grave in one of the old church cemeteries downtown (in the Historic District).

You should see and enjoy our community for yourself. Come on down!

Kudos from Great Britain

Yours is a fantastic magazine. It's very kind of you to allow overseas persons advertise in MaleBox Personals for free.

Very informative and interesting every month!

December Issue Fan

The December 2007 issue was a knockout; your articles on new anti-sex laws and your principled defense of anti-gay protesters marks The Guide as a magazine of reason and strength.

February Issue Fan

Your article on Rome was amazing, as was French Wall's editorial, "A Valentine's Message" [February 2008, both available at Guidemag.com].

Defend All Non-Traditional Marriages

On April 3, police with automatic weapons and a tank raided a compound in west Texas [housing polygamy-practicing Mormons]. They took a number of women and their children into custody. The women have been released back to the compound but all 416 children remain locked up. Judicial hearings will determine whether these children have been abused and what should be done to them.

Why was the raid authorized? Apparently a woman styling herself as an abused 16-year-old made two phone calls accusing those on the ranch of child abuse and other offenses. This woman has still not been identified and there is serious doubt about her story.

Why such outrage over polygamous marriage? Some religions authorize it and many people practice it de facto.. If we gays want recognition for gay marriage, why aren't we supporting the rights of others to engage in non-traditional marriages if they desire? Of course nobody should be coerced but isn't that a separate issue?

As for "age of consent," it's a hodge-podge varying by country and by state. It's 16 with parents consent in most states; in Canada, 14 with judicial consent; in New Hampshire 14 for males and 13 for females with parents' consent. Teen marriage may be a bad idea -- I'm even opposed to sex below age 18 -- but does that justify a military-style invasion of people who are doing it?

Just wondering.

Well, thanks Elin. If we're in the market for high-tech saunas or billiard tables (presuming you don't mean a sauna/billiard table combo product), we'll think of you!
