A Sampling of Gay -- or Gay-Friendly -- Nude Beaches
Black's Beach, San Diego, California. Nudity is banned within the portion owned by the city of San Diego, but legal in the area owned by the state. Gay men congregate at the northern end. This is the best known nude beach in the U.S., and among the most popular.
El Dorado, Zandvoort aan Zee, Netherlands. This popular stretch of shoreline lies just beyond a straight nude beach, about a 20-minute walk south from the center of the seaside town of Zandvoort aan Zee, accessible by train from Amsterdam.
Elia, Mykonos, Greece. While many gay naturist visitors to Mykonos head for touristy, congested Super Paradise beach, this is a quieter and more beautiful alternative.
L'Espiguette, Le Grau du Roi, Languedoc-Rousillon, France. This Mediterranean beach is about 50 miles from Montpellier. Situated to the west of a straight naturist area, it may be the best gay nude beach in France. L'Espiguette is undeveloped, unspoiled, and -- unlike popular Marseillan Plage to the east -- mostly free of gawkers and police.
Haulover Beach, North Miami, Florida. Attendance at this 800-yard swath of state-approved clothing-optional beach is mixed, but there's always a large gay contingent. The absence of any adjacent cruising area doesn't diminish Haulover's popularity with South Florida gay men.
Little Beach, Makena, Maui, Hawaii. Separated from nearby, clothing-mandatory Big Beach by a lava promontory, this gay-friendly naturist beach has a countercultural ambiance.
Obelisk Beach, Mosman, New South Wales, Australia. This 100-meter beach within Sydney Harbor National Park is officially designated "nudity permitted," and mainly frequented by gay men.
Playa del Muerto, Sitges, Spain. This secluded, pebbly beach is more of a genuine gay enclave than the more commercial, better known Playa de la Bassa Rodona, near the center of town.
Playita Quepos, Quepos, Costa Rica. This predominantly gay clothing-optional beach is located within picturesque Marco Antonio National Park.
Wreck Beach, Vancouver, British Columbia. This popular clothing-optional beach covers a stretch of shoreline within Pacific Spirit regional Park and near the University of British Columbia. The gayest section is inside the North Arm Jetty.
